Zaborowski's paintings invite us into a world of romance and tranquility. Michal paints ordinary people engaged in ordinary activities, but he gives them an import that compels us to examine them. He finds such beauty in these ordinary events--waiters at work, a hostess setting up for a party or a moment on the beach--that we wish we could trade places with the subjects of his paintings. Their worlds are filled with light and romance, and ours are enhanced just by looking at them.
Says Zaborowski, "I want to relay the atmosphere of preparation, the magic of anticipation; [not only] the anticipation that surfaces when we are waiting for something to happen [but also] the sense of anticipation we feel when something's already happened but failed to fulfill expectations. The mood of being unfulfilled--like looking at a sunset."
The beauty, the color and the light of Zaborowski’s paintings exhilarate us. However, as in viewing a sunset, we feel a certain melancholy. We know the moment will not last, and it will inevitably be followed by something darker. The admixture of beauty and melancholy in our everyday lives is so common that we sometimes fail to notice it. Michal draws our attention to it. In doing so, he reminds us that, although beautiful moments are fleeting, and although the world may soon turn ugly, there is always hope, because another moment of sublime beauty will come along not too long from now. This is the hope that keeps us going. It is what makes it so hard to take our eyes off Zaborowski's canvases.
